Michiel van Dijk: World travels
World travels, 1987-1993

It all started with wondering what to do and where to go on holiday in 1987. I somehow bumped into a 17-days organized tour to Egypt. As a boy reading about the pyramids I had been captured by the mysteries of those structures and the ancient culture. The professional interest was also available (having studied architectural engineering) so why not go there and see for myself?! Well, it was a stunning experience and the first encounter with such a different world left its marks several months. In fact it infected me and every year I looked forward to the new group travel brochures to pick out a new tour: a very easy way to determine your destination and travel around and see and do a lot in a relatively short time. These travels gave me a good impression of the different countries and I made a lot of good friends. From year to year though the desire for more freedom and a less organized way of travelling grew until I eventually chose the most logic step to start travelling alone.
