1. Lake Atitlan
Panajachel, Guatemala.
(September 1992)

Atitlan means "place with much water".
The lake was created 1000 years ago
when eruptions of the surrounding
Atitlan, Toliman and San Pedro
volcanoes closed down rivervalleys.
Panajachel, situated at 1570m,
is the largest city at the lake.

2. Indian market
Zunil, Guatemala.
(September 1992)

Almost every indian village
in the highlands of Guatemala
has its own clothes, colors and
accessories. According to some
sources the Spaniards introduced
this to be able to control them
better. In anyway todays local
markets are made into a very
picturesque and colorful experience.

3. Maya ruins
Tikal, Guatemala.
(October 1992)

The Mayan civilization reached
its top between 300 BC and 900 AD.
They lived deep in the jungle and
had their own script, calendar and
mythology. Their cities featured
large religious complexes with the
main temples reaching high into
the sky above the treetop level.
For some mysterious reasons all
cities were abandoned at about the
same time, people moved to other
areas and the jungle regained its
lost territory until archeologists
discovered and cleared the sites again.
