Michiel van Dijk: China-1

1. The Great Wall
Mutianyu, Beijing, China.
(September 1991)

This is one of the 7 world
wonders and visible from out
of space. The different parts,
built by the leaders of then
independent states as protection
to attacks from the north, were
united when China became one
for the first time in 221BC.
Now a total length of "only"
6000 km is remaining and being
restored.

2. Buddha
Leshan, Sichuan, China.
(September 1991)

Where the rivers Min, Qingyi
and Dadu come together
monks cut a giant, 71m high,
sitting buddha out of the rocks
to tame the fast streaming rivers.
The job was finished in 803 AD
after 90 years of work.

3. Karst landscape
Yangshuo, Guangxi, China.
(September 1991)

The landscape through which the
Li river flows, south of Guilin,
is breathtaking. After the softer
material has been eroded the hard
stone cores rise up like needles.
We enjoyed the scenery by boat
from Guilin and by bicycle and foot
around Yangshuo.
