Michiel van Dijk: Iceland/New York

1. Glacier lake
Jokulsarlon, Iceland.
(July 1993)

The Vatnajokull is with its 8300sqkm
the biggest glacier in Europe. The
maximum thickness of the ice mass
is 900m with an average of 420m.
It reached its maximum in the
"small ice age"(1600-1920).
This lake, that has been created
while the glacier is retreating,
is about 130m deep and contains
many huge floating ice blocks.

2. Svartifoss waterfall
Skaftafell National Park, Iceland.
(July 1993)

Iceland is lying on the Mid-Atlantic
Ridge, where the African and American
continental plates are being pulled
apart. The island is literally being
torn in two, at a rate of 2cm a year.
The ridge is marked by a belt
(40-60km wide) of volcanic craters,
hot springs, geysirs, earth cracks etc.
It is a geological relatively young
island with little eroded features
and numerous waterfalls. This one
is 20m high and shows beautiful
basalt formations that are created
when a thick layer of lava cools off
very slowly.

Intermezzo:
In 1993 me and Rene, a colleague-
friend, were looking for flights
to New York for a short holiday.
We selected the offer from
Icelandair, with the possibility
of a stop-over on Iceland.
A two-weeks trip with two totally
different experiences: first
desolate nature followed by Manhattan.

3. Aerial view of Manhattan
New York, USA.
(July 1993)

One of the best ways of getting
a good impression of the skyscraper-
landscape of Manhattan is a
helicopter flight. Ten minutes, $55,
but absolutely worthwhile. Too little
time to take perfect pictures:
this one was taken free hand outside
the window, but the result was amazing!
