Michiel van Dijk: Cycle trip Berlin-Singapore (Laos)

Photos:

1. Road and village
near Oudom Xay, Laos.
(September 1999)

Apart from the main links the
Laotian roads are very bad. The
asphalt surfaces seem to date
from the French colonial times
and have never or badly been
maintained. The hardly touched
landscape, very simple villages,
friendly people and the quietness
on and off the roads were refreshing
after the travel through South-China.

2. Boat races
near Luangprabang, Laos.
(September 1999)

Although it is possible to
extend your visa I didn’t want
to stay longer than 2 weeks in
Laos this time. I stayed however
1 day longer in Luangprabang to
visit a nearby village for the
annual boat races on the Pak Ou
river. Luang Prabang, an Unesco
protected city with many temples,
had become much more touristed
since my visit here in 1995.

3. Road-sliding kids
near Muang Vangviang, Laos.
(September 1999)

The area of Muang Vangviang is
known for its beautiful karst
landscape. During a descend in
heavy rainfall I took shelter
in a little village and saw
these children sliding down
the road. Since leaving Chengdu
in China I had been cycling 3000km
through the mountains and was
longing for the flat terrain,
that was waiting for me not too
far away now.
