Michiel van Dijk: Cycle trip Berlin-Singapore (Turkey)

1. Rendez-vous with Anna
Istanbul, Turkey.
(November 1998)

We had made an appointment
on November 14th, 14.00 hrs.
Between Budapest and Istanbul
I cycled 1800 km in 16 days
and took only 2 restdays
in order to be able to make it.
I was 6 minutes late.
The day of arrival was hell
with the worst possible weather
(storm and rain) and 70 km on
a busy highway, but the sight of
the Golden Horn, the large mosques
and last but not least Anna
was unforgettable. We spent in
total 1 week in Istanbul and 1
week in Asian Turkey, visiting
major highlights like Capadocia,
Fethiye, Pamukkale and Efes.
After Anna had left again I ar-
ranged all the necessary visa.

2. Black Sea coast
Amasra, Turkey.
(January 1999)

After one month I left Istanbul
on 20 December, the start of the
Ramadan in again terrible weather,
but arriving at the Black Sea the
sun greeted me. The route along the
coast was very beautiful, but also
very strenuous due to all the going
up and down. A good training though
for the things to come!

3. Mount Ararat
Dogubayazit, Turkey.
(November 1998)

Having conquered a 2640 m pass
in perfect weather (it was
considered the mildest winter of
the century) I crossed the
highplane of East Turkey.
Close to the borders with
Armenia and Iran this dead volcano,
with 5137 m the highest mountain
in Turkey, is situated very
dominantly in a beautiful
spacious surrounding together
with it's little brother (3895 m).
