Michiel van Dijk: Cycle trip Berlin-Singapore (Malaysia/Singapore)

1. Old Sultan’s palace
Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia.
(November 1999)

After crossing the Central highlands
from Thailand to Malaysia I spent
1 day in Kuala Kangsar, the residence
of the Sultan of Perak. His old palace,
painted white, yellow and black (the
Perak-state colors), was built without
any nails or architectural plans
and has now been turned into a museum.

2. Christ Church
Malacca, Malaysia.
(November 1999)

Malacca (Melaka) has a rich history.
Founded in 1400 by an exiled prince
from Sumatra, it became an important
port and was subsequently occupied
by the Portuguese (1511-1641), Dutch
(1641-1795) and British (1795-1956).
The historic centre is dominated by
a cluster of red Dutch buildings,
the Christ Church and old Stadhuys
being the most important. The pink
bricks were shipped from Holland
and were faced with local red paint.

3. Meeting at McDonald’s
Woodlands, Singapore.
(14 November 1999)

After crossing the Woodlands’
checkpoint I met Anna at the nearby
McDonald’s. This time I was half an
hour late, but I had made it!
After some fast food we cycled "home"
together and were caught in a heavy rain.
Achieving my goal after such long
anticipation was a great satisfaction and
the start of a new episode of my life.
