Michiel van Dijk: Last Play

1. Moki tunnel.

We cycled in 2 days over the "Forgotten World Highway" from Taumarunui to
Stratford, at the East side of Mt Egmont National Park. Many ups and downs
through river valleys, rolling hills, rain forest and a tunnel known as
the Hobbit Hole.

2. Summit, Mt Taranaki.

Mt Taranaki/Egmont is a 2518m high dormant volcano and with 7000mm annual
rainfall one of the wettest places in NZ. Known to hide itself most of the
time in clouds, we took the first good day to climb to the summit as far
as possible. Too much snow on the steep upper part, some from the day
before, proved too much for our shoes and we turned back before reaching
the crater edge. The views were beautiful and sliding down over the loose
scoria slope was fun.

3. Wilkies pools, Mt Egmont National Park.

The next 2 days we walked in warm and sunny weather around part of the
mountain to a hut close to these terraced pools, some with nice swimming
holes and rocky slides; good to relax just before returning home.

Let's go:
