Photos: Madeira, January 2002.

Madeira ("wooded") is a Portuguese island between Portugal, Marocco and the
Canarian islands. It’s a mountainous island famous for flowers and wine, very
beautiful, divers and pleasant with temperatures ranging between 16 in winter
and 26 in summer.

1. Fishmarket, Funchal.

On the fish market in Funchal, the capital city, you can see among others the
specialty here: espada, a long black eel-like deep sea fish.

2. East coast.

After 2 days of rain the weather cleared and on a beautiful day we walked the
easternmost point of the island with stunning views of the rugged coast.

3. Cural das Freiras.

Cural das Freiras or "Nuns' Valley" refers to the hiding place of the nuns
from the Santa Clara convent during an attack of French pirates in 1566.
Only in 1959 a modern road was built to replace the access by foot via a
narrow and steep path.
