Michiel van Dijk: Play-5

Photos: Terschelling, December 2001

Terschelling is one of the northern Dutch islands. The
sea between the islands and the mainland (Waddenzee) is
very shallow. During low tide in the summer you actually
can cross over walking the muddy banks and wading the
small rivers. Our crossing was quite different: storm
and high waters with some local flooding. During our
3-days’ stay we cycled and walked in sun, hail and snow.

1. Women.

Along the main road on the island is this statue of a
pointing woman. During the 2nd English-Dutch sea-war
(1665-1667), her exclamation : "Over there hundreds of
them are standing (beach posts), but thousands are
lying (dead men)!" was misunderstood and made the
English flee.

2. Boschplaat.

Formerly not attached to the main island, but joined
by sand deposits the Boschplaat is nowadays a nature
reserve. You can walk along the long stretch of sand
dunes on one side or....
