Michiel van Dijk: Play-3

1. Taiping

Taiping is Chinese for "social peace and tranquility".
A perfect place for our Christmas holiday. It is indeed
a sleepy, little town surrounded by beautiful lakes and
forested hills. There are good food (dim sum!) and many
well-preserved white Anglo-Malay buildings. Old
overhanging trees contribute to the special atmosphere
of the Lake Gardens.

2. Lake Gardens

The famous Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik) were built on the
site of an abandoned tin mine in 1890. The hills behind
them offer good hiking possibilities and there is
relatively little tourism.

3. Maxwell Hill

On one of the hills (1019m)is the oldest colonial hill
station in Malaysia: Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut). This
was formerly a tea estate. You can go up and down either
by public LandRover or walking. The 10km long narrow road
with numerous steep switchbacks offers great views.
