Michiel van Dijk: Last Play

Photos: Singapore and Netherlands, June - July 2004

1. Family/wedding dinner, Singapore.

After our first flight ever with Singapore Airlines, we
celebrated family reunion and belated wedding dinner with
Anna’s family in the Imperial Herbal Restaurant; special
and very nice food. I served her parents tea, they drank
it and thus I was accepted into the family officially:
that easy!

2. Veere harbour, Zeeland, Netherlands.

New Zealand was named after the Dutch province Zeeland by
the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who landed shortly on the
West coast in 1642. The Southwest province is in the
delta of Holland’s main rivers and well known for the
seawater control works that were initiated after a big
flood in 1953. We visited the latest and most innovative
one, the Oosterschelde Flood Barrier, and relaxed afterwards
in this pretty little harbour town enjoying drinks
and Dutch snacks on a sunny terrace.

3. Hup Holland Hup, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

During the time that we were in Holland the national
team played in the European Football Championship, held
in Portugal. Orange is our national colour, referring
to the royal family. In times like these everything,
everybody, everywhere seems to turn orange. This is a
Canal Touring boat in Amsterdam, near the Central
(Railway) Station. The support was not enough to help
the team reach the final though, in which Greece
became the surprise winner.

4. Wadlopen, Pieterburen, Groningen, Netherlands.

The Wadden Sea in the North of Holland is sheltered by
several small islands and very shallow. During low tide,
a big area between the mainland and the islands falls dry
and can be crossed by foot although it’s very muddy and
can be dangerous due to ever changing levels in the water
channels.
We walked a round trip from and to the shore with a guide
(compulsory) who enjoyed long distance walking and took
us to a ship. Ships, like this tourist boat, sail in and
out of the area at high tide and lie on the dry during
low tide. Meanwhile, people can walk around and visit
some seal colonies, that are native here.
It will become a National Park very soon.

5. Groninger Museum, Groningen, Netherlands.

This modern building is situated just opposite the old
railway station and at the entrance to the historical
city centre of Groningen.
It consists of three totally different pavilions,
designed from left to rigth by Philippe Starck (French),
Alessandro Mendini (Italian) and Coop Himmelbau
(Austrian). It represents a serving tray with pots. The
type and way of exhibition is very special and made it
one of our highlights.

6. River by night, Singapore.

This area comes alive in the evening with many people
, especially tourists, visiting the outdoor restaurants
and bars due to a welcome coolness, relaxing atmosphere
and the nicely lit buildings of the city center.
