1. Beach camping, Malaysia.
(August 2001)

The first night of a 4-days cycle tour
through Johor province in the south of
Malaysia we camped on the beach before
continuing to Desaru, Johor Lama and
Johor Bahru. Anna wanted to experience
what it is to cycle several days in a row;
she knows a little of what it is all about
now after 250 km with hills, sun and rain!

2. Staircase, Singapore.
(August 2001)

Before returning to the Netherlands I made
a couple of tours along some eye-catching
things in Singapore. These spiral staircases
are at the back of old low-rise blocks with
arcaded shops on the ground floor and
apartments above and can be seen in older
parts of Singapore and Malaysian towns.

3. Hungry Ghosts Festival, Singapore.
(August 2001)

The Chinese celebrate this festival
halfway the lunar year. They believe
that in this period the ghosts of their
ancestors come out of the underground world
and need to be satisfied with offerings
to make them return again to avoid having
them around bringing bad luck. Temporary
pavilions with altar, stage for opera
performances and a set table with chairs
for the ghosts to sit and eat and enjoy
themselves are a common sight.
