1. Long Bar
Raffles Hotel, Singapore
(September 2000)

Having a beer in colonial style,
with rows of automated ceiling fans.
Eating peanuts and throwing the empty
shells on the floor is a custom here.
The hotel is named after Sir Stamford
Raffles, who landed on the island in
1819 and who was of crucial importance
to the early development of Singapore.

2. Banana Leaf Restaurant
Little India, Singapore
(September 2000)

Eating in Little India.
And even before you are seated
the basic meal components are
already being put on your plate,
which happens to be a bananaleaf here.

3. Veerama Kali Amman Temple
Little India, Singapore
(September 2000)

The colors, smells and sounds in
Indian temples are impressive.
People buy a worship ticket and queue
before the shrine of their choice;
a priest collects the tickets,
goes into the shrine, does the
prepaid prayers and gives the people
a little something from the temple
(flower leaves, coconut shell, bananas)
to take home.
